Kolkata is situated on the right bank of the river Hooghly (about 150 kms upstream from the Bay of Bengal). The core city is sandwiched between the river on the west, the salt lakes to the east and the marshes and the swamps to the south. The region is part of the world's largest deltaic zone at the mouths of the river Ganges. The famous Sunderban mangrove forests are to the south of the city.

Kolkata's schools are either run by the state government or by private (many of which are religious) organisations. Kolkata has nine universities; numerous colleges are affiliated to these nine or to other universities located outside of Kolkata. The University of Calcutta (founded in 1857) has more than 200 affiliated colleges. Some institutions of national importance are the Indian Statistical Institute, the Indian Institute of Management, the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research.
